Open Courseware Initiative - II

NPTEL


                                       

                            I believe that by now all readers are familiar with what Open Courseware is all about and may have taken benefit from it in some way. If you missed my first post, you may read it here. I would like to introduce a couple of resources for references as part of study, hobbies or research. The first two resources were actually international and now I am revealing Indian contributions, as follows:




                           NPTEL is a collaboration of the Ministry of HRD along with the IITs and IISCs, featuring video and web lectures for engineering and humanities students.

                           The website provides:
  • Course materials according to various disciplines of engineering like Electrical, Mechanical etc. and subjects related to humanities like Ethics, Game Theory etc.  
  • Students can easily access video lectures from YouTube on the NPTEL channel
  • Courses are arranged in an easily browse-able format
  • NPTEL is trying to cover more courses that are very rare to find
  • A mention of upcoming courses
  • Semester-wise classifications of subjects
  • Lab-Demos, Illustrations, Animations and Video clippings
Panjab Digital Library

                                             
                             Panjab Digital Library(PDL) is a wealth for resources on Sikhism. It is a one man start-up that has unbelievably achieved significance as a resource for enthusiasts,who seek information on the religion. PDL is basically a research-level resource covering:
  • A comprehensive collection of books, magazines, manuscripts and newspapers related to Sikhism
  • Targeted search options based on user preferences
  • Provision for contributors to upload their documents, subject to moderation
  • Online exhibition, in a graphically appealing format
  • Religious manuscripts from other religions such as Hinduism and Islam
  • Option to browse content in advanced search
  • Case studies
                                 The above two are huge resources for students, teachers, researchers, professionals and enthusiasts to satisfy their hunger for knowledge and aid studies. I will try to bring more and more resources at the earliest and encourage readers to contact me regarding specific requests.

Everybody recommends having the bare minimum programs at startup for a faster PC, but how would one do that? This process requires some know-how and a lot of googling and reading(also understanding). Lost Indian Culture

"We should never forget our culture.", is something you would hear from a lot of people in India. During this conversation neither the speaker nor the listener gives a thought about "What is Indian Culture?"                                A Wikipedia search on Indian Culture(East Indian) would define culture based on religions, spirituality, cuisine(food), arts, clothing(ethnic costumes), values, customs and traditions, lifestyle, languages, literature,sports and popular media. Not to be confused with native culture(As Americans still believe Columbus found the right island). However, this does not exactly fall in line with the subject. A closer look at the Wikipedia article would give two words - Aryan and Dravidian. There is widespread controversy as to whether - they are two different races, Aryans were immigrants and if Aryan is the name of a race. Practically, 80 % Indians(Aryan or Dravidian) have accepted the authority of Vedas and similar literature as their
